Forgotten Treasures

Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us.
2 Timothy 1:14 NRSV

Have you ever put on a jacket and found a dollar bill (or perhaps a 5, 10, or 20) in the pocket?  Many of us put things aside; place keepsakes in storage; or pack up mementos in the attic, basement or garage.  When it comes time to clean out the accumulated items, we’re sometimes surprised by what we discover - long-forgotten treasures that we had valued so much that we saved them.

Our church has a few storage areas that we have periodically attempted to clean out, so we could store “more important” things there.  But one special storage space - the Corey Room, a small fire-proof room in the basement of the Parish House - is set aside as the archives for the congregation.  There are many interesting artifacts in this room, and a lot of history!  This includes blue prints of our buildings; portraits of key leaders in our congregation’s past, photographs of activities held at the church, as well as paper records of church membership, annual reports, newsletters, bulletins; and minutes from various boards, committees and organizations in the congregation dating back to the early 1800s.

I spent some time in the Corey Room last winter as I prepared for the bicentennial celebration of the sailing of Ann and Adoniram Judson to the mission field.  While there, I discovered the names of a husband and wife who grew up in our church and went to Burma as missionaries one hundred years after the Judsons.  Finding part of a newspaper clipping in an envelope labeled “Miscellaneous”  piqued my interest and I continue to research this almost-forgotten couple, as time permits.

One of our former pastors, the Rev. Dr. George H. Tooze, also found something in the Corey Room that piqued his interest and has led to a thirty-year odyssey.  Dr. Tooze will be with us during the worship service on Sunday, July 15 to present his latest book (volume 4 of The Life and Letters of Emily Chubbuck Judson [ Fanny Forester]) to the congregation and tell about the forgotten treasure he discovered in our Corey Room.

Plan to join us for worship on the 15th, and bring a dish to share for the pot-luck brunch that will be held in Judson Chapel after the service.

Pastor Martha Dominy
