Layperson of the Year 2012 - John Nowak
John Nowak has been selected as our Layperson of the Year by the Church Council, based on the number of nominations he received and the many reasons cited.
John has literally grown up in our church - attending Sunday school and youth group, singing in the children’s choir and ringing in the youth handbell choir, and serving as a deacon. John was baptized in our church in 1996. He currently serves as a congregational representative on the Church Council, Sunday school teacher and Head Usher. While he is quite visible, the myriad of tasks he undertakes frequently go unnoticed ... until now. Below are excepts from some of the nominations that highlight the reason John is this year’s honoree:
A few words to describe John would be - always pleasant, dependable and a gentleman. I feel John deserves this honor because to me there does not seem to be a task, large or small, that John is not willing to tackle with ease and confidence.
Congenial - Cooperative - Caring - Cheerful – always willing to go that extra mile.
John is an outstanding example of a Christian. He grew up in this church and has been a dedicated participant in all aspects of the life of our church. From opening the gates to greeting the people coming through them, John is one of the “first impressions” people have of us and we are fortunate, in this age when young adults appear to be in short supply in church leadership roles, to have John as a “face of First Baptist.”
John Nowak does whatever is asked of him. .... John spends Sundays, while we are in the Parlor, out in the hall protecting the building - and does not get to enjoy the heat in the winter months or the cool in the summer. He greets everyone with his warm and genuine smile each Sunday morning. John has been an active and faithful member, and it has been a pleasure to see him grow from a toddler to the man of God he is today.
John has quietly worked for years, since he was a young child, in our church. He is always present, always working, always demonstrating our church motto.
Since he was a small boy, John has been a perfect member. At about 5 or 6 he would sit in the front pew with the other children, and he was the only one with an open Bible - just because he wanted to. He helps on everything that is needed. He is dedicated and loves his church and serves constantly.
We will honor John at the 11:00 a.m. worship service on June 3 and the catered luncheon that follows immediately after the service. Tickets for the meal ($8) may be purchased through the church office or at Coffee Hour on May 20 and 27.

RECENT RECOGNITIONS
The Adoniram Judson Baptist Association thank and commend the First Baptist Church of Malden, Massachusetts for their participation in and in helping to make the Bicentennial Commemoration of missionaries Adoniram and Ann Judson on February 18-20, 2012 a success. The Judson’s sailing from Salem Massachusetts February 19, 1812 and their work as missionaries in Burma helped to launch American Baptist World Wide Missions in 1814.
Signed the 22nd day of April 2012 Dexter A. Bishop, ModeratorAdoniram Judson Baptist Association
The second recognition comes from the North Shore Habitat for Humanity. At their fundraising dinner on April 27, we received the Judy L. Hillard Community Service Award, which honors a non-profit organization for extraordinary dedication and unselfish service to the local community. The citation reads:
The First Baptist Church of Malden has demonstrated and continues to demonstrate a long-standing commitment to community service, social conscience and hard work through its relationship with North Shore Habitat for Humanity. For more than 27 years, First Baptist Church has supported our affiliate and our mission through volunteerism on the work site, volunteerism on our committees, attendance at our fundrasing events, participation in the International Food Fair, providing lunches for work site volunteers, and tithing. Moreover, the support that First Baptist Church has given us constitutes an unusual and remarkable commitment between non-profits that embodies everything that we seek to affirm and acknowledge through the award.
Many thanks go to all the people who helped host the Judson Bicentennial events in February and who, over the years have supported the ministry of Habitat for Humanity. Special mention goes to Susan, and her late husband George, Bowdridge for their tireless support of Habitat’s work and encouraging all of us in our covenant partnership with the North Shore affiliate. A beautifully engraved flame-shaped crystal sculpture and the book, If I Had a Hammer, by Jimmy Carter, are on display in the Parlor.
ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING
SHARING BRINGS JOY
To Us. To Others. To God.
One Great Hour of Sharing: Helping Youth Cope with Grief
Thoughts of camp usually include campfires, swimming, mosquito bites and pillow fights. And, for the children and teens who attend Camp Erin, it’s all that - and more. Camp Erin is a special camp for youth aged 6-17 who are grieving the death of a loved one. Created by The Moyer Foundation in 2002, Camp Erin is the largest U.S. network of no cost bereavement camps for youth, with 40 camps in more 25 states and one in Canada.
Campers participate in activities designed to help them address various aspects of their grief and memorialize the deceased. They find comfort among peers with similar experiences, and feelings of isolation decrease. Campers are provided with resources and access to no-cost peer-support groups that will continue to help them through the grief journey long after the bug bites have stopped itching.
MargaretAnn’s Place - Wisconsin’s Center of Hope and Camp Erin - Milwaukee received money from the One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) offering in 2011. Fifty-five campers and 58 adult volunteers attended an impactful weekend of laughter, sharing and tears.
“I witnessed many powerful, life-changing moments at Camp Erin,” says Kevin, an adult volunteer who serves as a Cabin Big Buddy to three 9-year-old boys. “One of my Little Buddies and I sat in silence for 45 minutes following the luminary ceremony, in which decorated foam stars and candles had been floated out onto the lake. While he contemplated the event, watching the candles flicker and reflect on the water, he had an outpouring of tears and grief that had not happened since his father had died from a brain tumor. Those 45 minutes of silence, just sitting side by side, changed both our lives for the better.”
This experience is only one way in which campers and volunteers discover joy in the midst of tears. Your generous gifts to the OGHS offering mean that you partnered with MargaretAnn’s Place and Camp Erin to help children and teens through grief.
FATHER’S DAY, JUNE 17, 2012
TOOLS OF HOPE SUNDAY
SHARE IN A HOPE-FILLED TOMORROW
What is a “TOOL OF HOPE” ? A simple truth : “Tools of Hope” are ordinary things.
Things that we often take for granted like: …clean water…education opportunities…
Tents…garden tools…seeds…sewing machines…water pumps and animals to raise.
These small things can make a world of difference for people who have been devastated
By tragedy, hurricanes, tornadoes, fires and floods.
Did you know that thousands of congregations and groups across the United States held
”Tools of Hope” programs last year? Church World Service has provided millions of dollars worth of all kinds of tools for people in need in more than 80 countries and the United States.
Our members and friends are invited to be a part of this wonderful outreach program once again this year on Father’s Day. We have a long-standing tradition here at First Baptist of remembering or honoring our loved ones and friends (especially fathers and men in our lives) by giving $5 gifts – the price of a basic farm tool. We can help share in the development work of CWS and their partners both in the United States and countries around the world in this small way.
On Father’s Day, June 17, we will remember those special people with an Honor Roll of all the gifts given so generously by our people. What an easy way to make someone next door or at the ends of the earth smile and feel God’s love through us !!
Please plan on taking part in this important program once again. On the two Sundays before Father’s Day, June 3 and 10, forms will be available during coffee hour to enable us to give our $5 gifts. Special cards are also available to give to those honored. A giving form is included in this Witness and may be sent to the church office or given to Irene Hofmann anytime before Tuesday, June 12.
Please remember – if it empowers people and helps to bring a hope-filled tomorrow, it’s a “TOOL OF HOPE” !!!

TOOLS OF HOPE
Share in a Hope-Filled Tomorrow
The American Baptist Women’s Ministries is once again sponsoring Tools of Hope for Father’s Day, June 17, 2012.
Each $5.00 gift will bring “Tools of Hope” to people who struggle to survive. Tools help bring hope and change. Cards recognizing your gift will be available in Judson Chapel after the Sunday worship service June 3 and 10.
If you would like to give a tool in memory or honor of a loved one please fill out the form and place it in the offering plate or mail it to the church office. Please make checks payable to First Baptist Church.
